Alexander Calder was born on 22 July 1898 at Lawnton in Pennsylvania. Engineer and artist, he gets first his training at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken in New Jersey, where he studied mechanical engineering. He then entered the Art Students League of New York in 1923 to study painting, sculpture and lithography. During his career, he made several trips to France, where he met Mirό, Léger and Mondrian. Calder is known for his mobile and his stabiles. He created a monumental sculpture for Expo 67. You can see this sculpture on l’Île-Sainte-Hélène in Montreal.
Alexander Calder died in New York on November 11 1976.
