Sorge, Bernice

Native of Nova Scotia, Bernice Lutfie-Sorge has lived, worked, studied and travelled in many parts of Canada and in other parts of the world, including Mexico, Central and South America and Europe. She settled in the Eastern Townships of Québec, where she bought an old abandoned church. It has been her art studio for the last ten years.

Sorge creates original prints using plants, leaves and weeds as matrix for her printing plates. Her most recent work, sometimes called “nature printing”in its similarity to the works of some 18th century botanists, is based on a technique Sorge developed in order to record objects from nature. Back in her studio the plants she selects locally become material for her visual and metaphoric creations. In their natural size they are a record simple and direct out of the raw chaos of the forest floor.

Sorge has participated in more than fifty exhibitions including solo and group shows. She has exhibited in both national and international exhibitions, including Paris, Tokyo, and New York City. She was awarded the Prix d’excellence at the first Biennial L’Art et le Papier organized by Galerie d’art Jean-Claude-Bergeron in 1993.
