Françoise Sullivan

Biography

Françoise Sullivan is a choreographer, dancer and painter, as well as a founding member of the Automatists group and cosignatory of the Refus global manifesto. Her art embraces painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance. Her works have featured prominently in the majority of exhibitions devoted to the history of art in Quebec and Canada over the last fifty years, and have been shown at such major sites as the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (1981), the Musée du Québec (1993), and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2003).

A recipient of the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas in 1987 and the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts in 2005, Françoise Sullivan is also a member of the Order of Canada and Ordre du Québec. She received a honorary doctorate from York University in 1998, and from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 2002. She has taught at Concordia University since 1977.
