She studied drawing in Karlsruhe, Germany and the fine arts in Paris at l’Académie de La Palette. Married to Robert Delaunay, she invented with him “orphism”, the utilization of circular shapes to convey the idea of colour as a rhythmic vibration. She applied orphism in different forms of expression including illustration, decoration, design of fabrics and fashion.

She left an abundant body of work composed of paintings, etchings, lithographs, artist books and “haute couture” creations. We recognize the works of Sonia Delaunay by their exploitation of circular shapes in bright colors.

Sonia Delaunay died in Paris in 1979.
