Artist of Belgian origin, Pierre Alechinsky was born in 1927. First trained as an illustrator, he founded in 1949, with Karel Appel, Christian Dotremont and Asger John, the CoBrA Group, (Co for Copenhagen, Br for Brussels and A for Amsterdam) grouping artists from Denmark, Belgium and The Netherlands, promoting technical spontaneity and freedom of expression in painting.

Author of an impressive corpus of paintings and prints, Alechinsky is currently one of the most prominent European artists. His work was shown in special exhibitions at the Museum of modern art (MOMA) and the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The François Mitterrand National Library of Paris presented in 2005 a major retrospective of his prints and the Royal Museum of Belgium made offered him a consecration by presenting in 2007 “Alechinsky from A to Y” a major retrospective.
